Hick Moonves and Hick CBS’ Assault Against America

As the Center for Rural Strategies notes:

CBS plans to take a real family from rural America and put them on display in a Beverly Hills mansion as part of a new reality-based program tentatively titled "The Real Beverly Hillbillies." Many rural families face a host of difficult challenges. They don't need a reality television program based on "The Beverly Hillbillies" to hold them up to insult and ridicule. …It's time to stop mocking and start caring about rural America.

Opposition to CBS’ “Real Beverly Hillbillies” is continuing to spread, most recently from the halls of Congress to the union hall.

United Mine Workers of America President Cecil E. Roberts has sent a letter to the president and board chairman of CBS’s parent company saying the proposed program is “repugnant to me and the union members I represent.”

Mr. Roberts, a Vietnam veteran, noted that a large proportion of men and women serving in the U.S. armed forces come from rural communities. “These soldiers deserve better than this,” he wrote.

He also said he was strongly considering sending union representatives to the next Viacom annual meeting to register their complaints to the corporation’s board of directors. Viacom, which owns CBS, will hold its annual meeting May 21.

On Capitol Hill last month, 44 U.S. representatives signed on to a letter to CBS President Leslie Moonves asking the network to drop plans for the show. The letter said the program would “only serve to propel outdated and erroneous stereotypes about rural Americans.”

The letter received bipartisan support and was organized by Kentucky Congressman Hal Rogers.

In other developments, state legislators in Tennessee and Louisiana introduced resolutions asking CBS to drop its plans to produce “The Real Beverly Hillbillies.”
